Failing Forward
College is a time of great change, great learning and of course great experiences. Throughout my time at the University of Alaska Fairbanks I've learned more about myself than I ever thought imaginable. I've learned the most important lessons of my life here but I've also made some mistakes and failed along the way.
When I make a mistake I have to ask myself:
Is it the end of the World?
What can I learn from it?
Unexpected occurrences happen and sometimes we just have epic failures whether it's relating to college or not it happens. As a student organization leader it can be extremely devastating when you put a lot of work into an event and no one shows up. It can be hard to utilize this time as a learning experience but one of the key points that I would like to make is that failing often opens our imaginations to new ideas and new ways to do to things. When we choose to accept our failure and use it as a learning point we are failing forward. Many people give up on something when they fail and sometimes it might be necessary.
Bringing this back to a more academic sense if you are struggling with a class or perhaps you failed an important test. Think back to the potential reasons why you failed, and coordinate a plan to conquer the next test.
I wish failure upon no one but it's important as we grow professionally to learn how to handle failure in a positive way not just for ourselves but for our friends, family, and colleagues.
