The amazing things our students get to do!

I stumbled across this article this morning about some UAF students who are participating in the NASA University Student Launch Initiative competition, which is designed to challenge university-level students to design, build and launch a reusable rocket with a scientific or engineering payload to one mile above ground level.

Governor's Cup!

For some background information on the Governor's Cup check out Nanooks Hockey Blog.  This guy (who happens to be my fiancĂ©) does an excellent job sharing his opinions on each and every game, before and after!   I talked about my Governor's Cup two years ago too.

This weekend of Alaska Nanooks Hockey was intense! That game happened to be the beginning of a three year winning streak!  It has been awesome.  This is the second year in a row that the games have been split, but the Nanooks have won the shootout, claiming the title of the trophy!

I don't really have a whole lot to say - but I did create this video of the shootout that I took with my iPhone - so enjoy!  (Perhaps I'll try to get some pictures up later this week).

Alternative Spring Break

So what is Alternative Break? Well, in short, it's a program that is put on through the LIVE office here at UAF in which a group of students go and volunteer during spring break. They raise money throughout the school year by doing different fundraisers. I thought I would write about Alternative Spring Break because I am attending a dinner & movie fundraiser they are holding this evening and felt like a lot of people don't know about the program. They hold these fundraisers to raise money to travel to another community to do hands-on volunteer work. This year they are going to Destin, FL to help with a Gulf Coast Restoration Project. Some of the other sites from past Alternative Spring Breaks have been Moab, UT, Arctic Village, AK, El Salvador, Washington D.C., and New Orleans. Any student is eligible to apply, but should know that there is an application process that requires an interview and not everyone who applies is selected. I personally know several people who are involved with Alternative Spring break and who have been on previous trips and they have nothing but positive things to say about their experiences with the LIVE office and the Alternative Spring Break team.

If you're curious and want to learn more about Alternative Spring Break you can use on the link below to bring you to their page on the UAF site:

A Glimpse of Warmth to Come

It’s finally here: the warm air, the sunshine, and that desire to get out of your room as fast as possible.

UAF has been experiencing one heck of a cold snap. For about six weeks, it was at least -30, mostly -40, and sometimes -50 degrees Fahrenheit! That’s pretty cold. Now, all of the sudden, the temperature is hovering around zero degrees and everyone is pretty excited.

It is finally possible again to be outside for more than a moment without your face freezing! We can go winter hiking, climbing on the outdoor climbing wall, go sledding on the amazing campus sledding hills, play Frisbee Golf all over campus, and even go skiing on the trails behind campus- all 30 miles of them.

There are plenty of tantalizing options for getting outdoors, even before there is grass beneath our feet. Instead of trying to stay warm, the challenge now is to concentrate on schoolwork!
